Remember when Google gave you ten blue links and a fair shot at one of them? AI answers took that away. Now Google is handing a little of it back.

On 15 October, Google published an update to AI Mode and AI Overviews built around one idea: more ways to connect with the web. For hotels, two parts of it stand out.

What Google announced

Inline links are moving up. Inline links are the ones embedded in words and phrases inside an AI response. Google says it has made “continued and substantial increases” to how often they appear, and it is launching updates to show them higher up, so key sources are easy to click when someone needs them.

This one is described as a launch, not a test.

Official sites may get their own spot. Google’s reasoning is simple: sometimes there are only one or two official places on the web to complete a task or get exact information. So it will be testing a dedicated section at the top of an AI response that surfaces those links, with a note on why each one is useful.

Why this is good news for hotels

Google didn’t name any examples, so this part is our read.

Think about the searches guests make before they book or arrive: reserve a table, book a spa treatment, check the pet policy, find parking, get directions.

Each has one correct destination, and the hotel owns it. Too often a booking site, directory or review platform answers instead.

If the test works the way it reads, the hotel’s own page could be the first thing a guest sees at the moment they are ready to act.

That is a chance to win back traffic AI answers have been taking, and it is the closest thing to the good old days of ten blue links we have seen since AI answers showed up.

Not a full return to ten blue links

Google is heading in more than one direction at once. In September, Search Engine Roundtable reported a test where links inside AI Overviews take people into AI Mode instead of out to websites. More links is good. Where they lead matters just as much.

The honest bit

The official-site section is a test. Google hasn’t shared how far it is rolling out, which markets or searches qualify, how it decides what counts as official or what any of this does to clicks. It also hasn’t said how any of it will show up in reporting. We will be watching, and we will update you as we learn more.

What to do now

You don’t need to wait for a rollout date to get ready.

Make it obvious who you are. Use the same hotel name, address and phone number on your site, your Google Business Profile and your listings. Organization structured data helps Google connect the dots.

Give every page one job. A spa page should lead to spa booking. A dining page should lead to a reservation. The clearer the purpose, the easier it is for Google to pick the right page.

Check your task links. Click through booking, reservations, spa and directions on mobile. A broken link on the right page is still a miss.

Run a monthly test. Write 10 branded task prompts, such as “book a table at [hotel]” or “[hotel] pet policy”. Run them in AI Mode and AI Overviews each month. Record if your domain appears, where it sits and which page Google picks. Keep the prompts the same so you can compare month to month.

A good week for content, too

Two smaller updates in the same post are worth a look if your hotel publishes a blog or video.

Timely-article carousels are rolling out to more locations and languages. These are the prominent carousels of recent articles in AI answers, and Google says timely articles will now appear on a wider range of queries. They are built for news and reporting, so a hotel blog may not qualify. Google hasn’t said what counts as timely or who is eligible. Still, fresh local content, such as events, seasonal guides and what’s new in town, is the kind of thing worth watching here.

Clickable creator and publisher profiles are being tested on video results in AI Mode. Names on video results link straight to a Search profile. If your hotel puts video on YouTube, this could be a new way for guests to find the rest of your work.

Neither is a guaranteed win. Both are reminders that Google is putting more of the open web back into AI answers, and the content you already publish is part of that.
