Google’s AI Mode is moving further into the travel booking journey.
Its latest travel updates allow users in the US to search for hotels conversationally, compare options using information such as reviews and key property details, and continue through Google to make a booking.
For hotel marketers, the interesting part isn’t simply that Google has launched another travel feature.
It’s how much closer AI search is getting to the point of booking.
From “Where Should I Stay?” to “Book This Hotel”
We’ve talked a lot about how AI is changing the discovery stage of travel.
Travellers can ask increasingly specific questions such as:
“Where should I stay in Brooklyn for a weekend with good restaurants and easy access to Manhattan?”
AI platforms can then recommend destinations and properties without the traveller working through a traditional list of blue links.
Google’s latest update takes that journey another step forward.
Rather than AI Mode only helping travellers research where to stay, users can now compare hotel options and continue towards booking within the same search experience.
For hotels, that makes visibility within AI-powered search even more commercially important.
What Does This Mean for Hotel SEO?
Traditional hotel SEO isn’t disappearing.
Your website, Google Business Profile, reviews, structured information and wider brand presence all contribute signals that help search engines understand what your property is, where it is and why it might be relevant to a traveller.
But the way that information is surfaced is changing.
Hotels increasingly need to think beyond:
“Do we rank on page one?”
and start asking:
“Does Google understand our hotel well enough to recommend it?”
That means building clear signals around your location, amenities, experiences, audience and what genuinely differentiates your property.
It’s where traditional SEO and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) increasingly start to overlap.
And What About Direct Bookings?
There’s another important consideration here.
The more of the travel journey that happens within Google, the greater the need for hotels to understand how and where their property appears throughout that journey.
Google’s initial hotel booking experience includes major hotel groups and OTAs, making the battle for visibility — and ultimately the booking — even more interesting.
For independent hotels in particular, strong direct-booking strategies aren’t becoming less important.
They’re becoming more important.
Hotels still need to give travelers a reason to choose the direct experience when they reach them, whether that’s through better rates, exclusive offers, loyalty benefits or a stronger website and booking journey.
The Bigger Picture
AI search is quickly moving from travel inspiration towards travel transactions.
For hotel marketers, that’s the real story.
SEO, GEO, metasearch, hotel feeds, reviews and direct-booking strategy can no longer be viewed completely separately. They’re increasingly contributing to the same fragmented search and booking journey.
And we’re likely only at the beginning.
