Good news, PR people: AI still likes the press. Slightly awkward news: it doesn’t always like the same journalists we do. This week brought three stories every hotel marketer should know about, and we did the reading so you don’t have to.

Here’s the rundown, plus what it means for your hotel.

Earned Media Made a Comeback

Meltwater’s AI search visibility report for September, published 10/15/2026, tracked about 6.1 million citations from more than 4,000 prompts across eight AI platforms, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Mode and AI Overviews. The short version: AI tools went back to trusting the press. A bit.

  • Earned media and news rose from 29.4% to 35.6% of citations, up 6.2 percentage points. That’s the first rise after four straight monthly declines, though it’s still below April’s 39.5%.
  • YouGov, a survey and research publisher, entered the top 10 sources for the first time, with 21,558 citations, and gained share on all eight platforms.
  • YouTube was still the most-cited single source, but its citations fell 57% month over month. Even AI needs a break from video sometimes.

Before anyone pops the champagne, Meltwater is clear that one month doesn’t make a trend, and it tracked categories like banking, cars, and fashion, not travel. Fair. But two of its own recommendations read like they were lifted from our Digital PR notes: publish original research people want to read, and give journalists data and spokespeople.

For hotels: your booking data is more interesting than you think. Booking patterns, guest survey results, and destination data can become the original research journalists quote and AI tools cite.

AI Is Reading Different Journalists Than You’re Pitching

Here’s the one that stings. In a piece published 10/13/2026 by The Media Copilot, and also carried by Fast Company, Pete Pachal looks at how AI search is changing which journalists matter to PR. The killer stat comes from a Muck Rack analysis: when it compared the journalists PR teams pitch most with the journalists AI cites most, the overlap was only 2%.

Two percent. You could fit that overlap in a hotel elevator.

Other points from the piece:

  • Journalism accounts for roughly 20% to 30% of the links AI search engines cite.
  • Citation rates are highest in an article’s first seven days.
  • Cited press releases contain about twice as many statistics and two and a half times as many bullet points as uncited ones. AI, it turns out, loves a list.
  • PR tools are starting to score journalists on AI visibility. Muck Rack launched AI Visibility Badges in March 2026, and Cision added an AI search visibility dashboard in July 2026.

For hotels: the biggest outlet on your wish list isn’t automatically the one AI tools trust for travel answers. When we build media lists now, we check reach and fit, and also which outlets and writers AI tools cite for the searches your guests make. That last part is where our AI Citation Outreach starts.

Press Releases Have a Longer Shelf Life Than Your Breakfast Buffet

Turns out press releases don’t expire at midnight. Notified, the company behind GlobeNewswire, announced a study on 10/15/2026 covering more than 25,000 GlobeNewswire press releases and nearly 1 million AI citations. Its headline finding: 56% of ChatGPT and Claude citations to those releases came after the first week. It also found that a small share of releases captured most of the citations.

Two grains of salt. Notified sells press release distribution, so it’s not exactly a neutral party, and the full methodology isn’t out yet. It’s due to be presented at PRSA ICON on 10/19/2026. It also doesn’t contradict the seven-day finding above. Coverage gets an early spike, then a long tail, like most good parties.

For hotels: treat announcements as long-term assets, not one-day stunts. Publish them on your own site, keep them specific (dates, numbers, named spokespeople), and keep them accurate. If AI is still quoting your renovation news in December, you want it quoting the right opening date.

The three&six Take

Put the three stories together and AI’s taste in sources looks pretty clear: credible third-party coverage, original data, and facts it can check. A famous press list and launch-day fireworks are optional extras.

That’s the thinking behind Digital PR at three&six. Digital PR Campaigns create new coverage built on research. AI Citation Outreach goes after the sources AI tools already trust.
